Sophie McCarthy
General Manager

Sophie McCarthy joined McCarthy Mentoring as General Manager in 2007 and in the past five years has significantly grown the business. She is also a Director of Griffin Theatre Company and a member of the Hear for You Advisory Board.

Prior to this role Sophie worked for a decade in communications and project management roles in the New South Wales Government's Science and Medical Research Agency, Jackson Wells, Manidis Roberts and overseas aid and development organisation Plan International.

She began her working life as a researcher at the Northern Territory Museum compiling a report on World War Two shipwrecks in Darwin Harbour and then transferred those research skills into the public health field as a researcher and project manager. She managed research projects on HIV testing; asthma and air pollution; and reviews of NSW services in domestic violence and postnatal depression for women from non English speaking backgrounds. She has published numerous reports for government agencies and peer reviewed journals.

Her formal education includes a Bachelor of Arts in history and political science from the ANU and a Masters in Public Health from the University of Sydney.

She was the President of the Family Planning NSW Foundation from 2001-2007 and a member of the South Eastern Illawarra Area Health Service Human Research Ethics Committee from 2008-2009. In 1997 she was awarded a Vincent Fairfax Fellowship for ethics in leadership. Sophie is married with three children and lives in Sydney.
